The floral at your wedding—whether it be small touches or practically the main event — is a gorgeous medium to symbolize the love you and your partner share and have all around you. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen SO many Twin Cities weddings go from beautiful to ✨breathtaking✨ once the floral team arrives and works their magic.
If you don’t have much of a green thumb or haven’t been exposed to a lot of flowers or floral design, it can be overwhelming figuring out where to begin. Even if you kind of know what you want, it’s hard to know who you can trust with the best day of your life! Plus, what options do you have if you want to keep your wedding as planet-friendly as possible?
No worries! I have a list of amazing Twin Cities (and some greater MN too!) wedding floral vendors. You’ll hear this a lot if you work with me: I got your back! 🙂
Sustainable floral is possible
Wait, “planet-friendly” flowers? Aren’t flowers natural? Yes! Well, kind of. As with most things, there is a lot of nuance when it comes to sustainable wedding floral options. Technically the most sustainable option of all is to not have any party and everyone should ride pre-owned bikes to the ceremony where they bring leftovers from home for dinner and sit in the dark with no music! I know, that is ridiculous :D. And that’s not what I’m recommending! It is way more chill than that! Everything is about small choices that add up. 🙂
What sustainable floral looks like
Planet-friendly floral:
- Is local and seasonal to be the best of the vendor’s ability
- Is organic / grown without fertilizer or pesticides
- Celebrates nature herself — no dyes or paint to change it
- Is without PLASTIC (i.e. no floral foam or plastic faux floral elements)
- If you peruse wedding floral websites and they say things like “foam free!” this is what they’re talking about!
Options for wedding floral that’s out of season
If you’re set on a certain color scheme that you just can’t swing during a certain time of year (like a winter wedding), I suggest two ideas: First, you could try to pick a wedding date that has your ideal floral elements in season. I actually know a couple who’s done this!
If that’s not an option or you’re too far into planning, another approach is using silk wedding floral arrangements that you can rent, from a place like Green Goddess Floral or Silk Stem Collective (both of which are linked below!). It’s a greener alternative to plastic and they are SO awesome looking!!
Now for the Minnesota wedding floral recs, as promised! 🙂
