When you’re in it, a pregnancy can feel SO long. Maybe you’re feeling sick, tired, and sore. Or maybe you’re feeling great but so excited to meet your child, so the months just crawl by.
In reality, though, 9 months is such a short period of your life. And it gets pretty busy with getting ready for baby!
The best way to remember this fleeting, defining moment in your life? Document it.

Why should I book a maternity photoshoot?
I’m a maternity and newborn photographer here in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. One of the most common things I hear new parents saying during their newborn session is:
I just can’t even remember a world where she/he’s not here.
That’s such a valid feeling! But my job as a maternity photographer is not only to help you remember those sweet last moments before your baby arrived, but to document it so you can look back on it forever. The excitement, the anticipation, the preparation, all of it!

When should I book a maternity photoshoot?
Ideally, your maternity photoshoot would be done between 30 and 35 weeks or so. You want to have a good-sized bump, but it’s best if you’re not in those last, most uncomfortable weeks of your pregnancy.
I also don’t want you feeling anxious that you’ll go into labor before we get the chance to get your photos done! Understanding your health and family history helps a ton here. For example, if you were delivered very early or late, there’s a chance that you will experience the same thing. Nothing to be worried about — just more information to help us plan!
As far as booking your session, shoot for having your session booked by the early weeks of your second trimester. We want to have as much time as possible to get you ready!

Where are the best maternity photoshoot locations in the Twin Cities?
First of all, don’t freak out if you’re pregnant in the middle of winter! Maternity photos can be just as beautiful when taken inside.
Your home might be a good fit, but if not, a studio space or other space will work out, I promise!
If you’re planning an outdoor session, there are some fabulous outdoor spaces around the Twin Cities that’ll work really well. A few quick ideas:
- Como Park
- Lyndale Peace Garden
- Boom Island Park
- Theodore Wirth Park
- Rice Park
- Westwood Hills Nature Center
- Saint Anthony Main
- Lake Harriet Bandshell Park
- Lebanon Hills Regional Park

What should I wear for my maternity session?
Honestly, you should wear whatever you feel good in. You absolutely DO NOT have to wear a flowy dress if that’s not your jam. If it is? More power to you!
I work with a lot of creative, out-of-the-box families and I’ve seen outfits of all kinds work! Think overalls, workout gear, jeans…the list goes on.
Just a few outfit notes:
- Make sure you feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session
- You’ll probably want more than one outfit—we’ll chat about this when you book your session
- Creative is good but remember the focus is on you and your beautiful pregnancy, not your outfit

What do we do with the photos?
I love this question! Here at JKP, I’ve got you covered. You will get every image you choose in digital and print, so you’ll have something fun to pass down to your kid and have a tangible way to remember this super fleeting and special time in your life!
I offer high quality, sustainably made products right here in Minnesota – from fine art prints to hand-bound albums to keepsake boxes where you can collect photos and other mementos throughout your kid’s life. Think a graduation or 30th birthday gift?
The upshot is that these photos are not just for now, they are for you and your kid 20+ years from now. And to that end, they simply cannot live in your email or on your phone, amiright?
